Patricians and Plebeians Under Etruscan Rule
- Etruscan rules rome, divided into 2 classes= patricians & plebeians
- patricians= "father”, advised king, controlled valuable land, important military+religious office
- plebians: "many”, 95% population , can’t be priests or gov. officials, serve in army
The Patricians Create a Republic
- patricians resent etruscan rule, rebelled, drove out king, created a republic
- republic=officials work for interests of ppl<== meant “patricians” to the patricians
- put power into senate (group of 300 men that patricians elected) served as judges
- 2 elected leaders (consuls) share command of army, senate advise (decisions=law)
The Plebeians Rebel
- rome=republic, patricians all power, only them=gov.,
- plebeians had to fight
- for what they want
- struggle between plebeians and patricians
- known as “the conflict of the orders”
- plebeians got more power after this conflict
The Plebeians Gain Political Equality
- Patricians agreed to let the plebeians elect officials
- called the Tribunes of the Plebs
- tribunes spoke for the plebeians to the senate and consuls
- plebeians gained some important rights
- eventually, plebeians gained rights for equality
- After 200 years plebeians used series of protest, win political equality
- demanded written down laws
